A ductless mini split uses an inverter driven compressor. It ramps up slowly instead of slamming on like a central air conditioner. That soft start behavior means a smaller generator can often carry a single zone without tripping its breaker, especially if the unit is already running when the outage hits.
The exact starting wattage depends on the outdoor unit size and the indoor head count. Your generator or transfer switch installer needs the nameplate data from the equipment. We can provide that after the install, but the electrical connection to backup power is arranged separately with a licensed electrician.
What Old West Minisplits Handles and What Stays Separate
Our flat price covers the mini split equipment, labor, line set, standard electrical, refrigerant, testing, cleanup, and even a Home Depot run for touch-up paint. No trip fees, no upcharges. The honest exceptions are stated up front: a very long line set, a panel upgrade the house already needed, or unusually difficult mounting.
We do not wire the generator inlet, install an interlock kit, or connect the mini split to a transfer switch. That is a separate job for an electrician. Planning the Backup Power Setup Around the Mini Split
The smart sequence is to know which zones you want to run during an outage before the generator electrician sizes anything. A 1 zone system at $2,000 is a far smaller backup load than a central unit. A 3 zone system at $5,400 gives you room by room control, so you can shut down unused heads and stretch the generator further.

Can I run all three zones on backup power?
You can run whichever heads the generator and transfer setup can support. A 3 zone system at $5,400 gives you the option to shut down unused heads and reduce the load. The generator side of that equation is not something Old West Minisplits installs or quotes.
Does Old West Minisplits install the interlock kit or transfer switch?
