Mini Split Installation for Metal Buildings and Steel Shops
A steel building in Central Texas is a solar oven with a door on it. The skin heats up by ten in the morning, the air inside stacks up hot under the ridge, and by August the shop is unusable from noon until dark. Ductwork was never run out there, and nobody wants to build a mechanical closet in the middle of a workspace.
A ductless mini split is the straight answer. One outdoor unit, a small head mounted high on a wall or purlin, a line set through one sealed penetration, and the shop is conditioned. Mounting to Steel Without Wrecking the Building
A metal building is not a stud wall, and it should not be treated like one. Indoor heads get anchored to girts, purlins, or a properly backed section of the wall panel, not lag-bolted into a bare R-panel rib that will oil-can and sag under the weight. Where there is no framing member where the head needs to go, we add backing so the load lands on structure instead of sheet metal.
The wall penetration is the part cheap installs get wrong. Ribbed panel does not seal against a flat plate, so the line set opening gets a proper sleeve, butyl or approved sealant, and a cover that sheds water down the panel instead of behind it. Done right, that hole stops being a future rust streak or a wasp highway.
Condensation, Radiant Heat, and What the Building Needs From You
Steel sweats. When conditioned air meets an uninsulated panel in July, you get condensate running down the inside wall, and no amount of equipment fixes that. If your building is bare metal with no insulation or vapor barrier, spray foam or batt work from an insulation contractor you hire separately will do more for comfort and dryness than any upgrade to the mini split itself. We will tell you honestly what we see before we install, not after.
Radiant gain matters too. A dark roof with no insulation loads the space all afternoon, so head placement, unit sizing, and drain routing all get planned around how your specific building behaves. Condensate lines run to daylight or to a pump where gravity will not cooperate, and they get routed so a forklift or a ladder does not take one out.
Power in a Shop, and What the Flat Price Covers
Standard electrical is included: the disconnect, the whip, the circuit run from an existing panel with capacity. Plenty of shops out here are fed by a subpanel that already has room, and those go in clean. If your building has no panel, or the panel needs an upgrade the property already needed, that is work for a licensed electrician you arrange separately, and we say so up front rather than sliding it onto a bill later.
The flat price also covers equipment, labor, line set, refrigerant, testing, cleanup, and a Home Depot run for touch-up paint. No trip fees, no upcharges. The honest exceptions are stated before you commit: a very long line set from a detached shop back to the meter, a panel upgrade the property already needed, or unusually difficult mounting such as high-bay work above a mezzanine. These flat prices are for new installs only. They are not repair pricing and not a service-call rate, so if an existing unit in your shop quit, this page is not the number for that.

No. One zone is $2,000, two zones are $3,700, three zones are $5,400, whether the walls are drywall or R-panel. Four or more zones are quoted individually. The only things that move the number are the exceptions we name up front: a very long line set, a panel upgrade the property already needed, or unusually difficult mounting.
Will a mini split work in an uninsulated metal building?
It will run, but it will fight the building all day and you may see condensation on bare steel. Insulation is the highest-value fix, and it is work you arrange with an insulation contractor, not something we perform. We will give you a straight read on your building before installing so you are not surprised by the results.
Do these prices cover fixing the mini split already in my shop?
No. The flat prices are for new installations only. They are not repair pricing and not a service-call rate.
Are there rebates or tax credits for a heat pump in a shop building?
Mini splits are heat pumps, so they cool through Central Texas summers and handle our mild winters without a furnace, and incentives sometimes apply. We do not quote rebate or credit amounts because they change and eligibility depends on the structure and how it is used. Verify current numbers with your utility provider and the IRS, and confirm any electrical requirements with a licensed electrician.
