A mini split that drips or leaks from the indoor head is a problem, not normal operation. Outdoor condensate on the pad is expected in cooling mode. Indoor water on the wall or floor usually means a clogged drain line, dirty filters that froze the coil, or a unit that was never set level with a proper drain slope.

Clogged condensate drain is the most common cause
Moisture from the indoor coil should collect in a pan and run out a small drain tube to the outside or a household drain. Dust, pollen, and algae plug that tube. Water backs up and overflows, often at the wall penetration or from the bottom of the indoor unit. Turn the system off. Find the drain outlet near where the lines leave the house and try a wet/dry vacuum on the outdoor end or a cup of white vinegar poured into the indoor drain. If it clears, monitor it. Repeated clogs usually mean the line lacks slope or a trap, which is an original installation defect. That is not a service Old West Minisplits provides. Dirty filters freeze the coil, then the melt floods the pan
Packed filters starve the coil of air. The coil temperature drops below freezing, ice builds, then a thaw dumps more water than the pan and drain can handle. Texas dust makes this happen faster in cooling season. Slide the filters out of the indoor unit, wash them, dry them fully, and reinstall. Run fan-only to melt remaining ice before returning to cool. If the coil ices again soon after, airflow or refrigerant is the real issue. Low refrigerant on an older system is a frequent reason homeowners stop paying for repairs from quote-based contractors and consider a new heat pump instead.
Level mounting, failed pumps, and choosing a new install
The indoor unit must sit level so water reaches the drain outlet. Gravity drain lines need a continuous downward run. When gravity is impossible some installs add a condensate pump, and those pumps fail. Rushed quote-based jobs skip these details more often than they should. Is water coming from the outdoor unit a leak?
No. In cooling the outdoor unit produces condensate and it is normal for water to run off the unit or collect on the pad. The issue is water originating at the indoor unit, running down the wall, or pooling on the floor inside.
What can I safely try before calling anyone?
Clean the washable filters, confirm the indoor unit looks level, and attempt to clear the drain line from the outdoor end with a vacuum or vinegar flush. Do not add refrigerant, open electrical covers, or disassemble the indoor coil yourself. Those steps exceed homeowner work and Old West Minisplits does not perform repairs on existing equipment.
Why does this happen more during Austin summers?
The system runs nearly nonstop in our heat, so it produces a lot of condensate and the drain sees more dust. Clogs appear sooner. A well-installed mini split still should not drip indoors.
